The most sensational event in the contemporary history of our country The trial made people excited for 10 consecutive days. I attended (along with many other concerned people). I had a reserved seat in the second row, and the police officer running the court was my cousin. The defendant (during the trial, everyone, including the defense attorney, referred to him as defendant, and his name was almost never mentioned) murdered a white nun. He is only 20 years old. As soon as the trial began, he insisted that he loved the nun, that he had committed murder and should be hanged. But the judge, who was known for his kindness and fairness, decided to give the case an absolutely fair trial. They even spent a lot of money to hire a psychiatrist from New Zealand to examine the defendant. The doctor was a chubby, nervous white man whose voice was so low that the judge repeatedly asked him to raise his voice during the hour-long testimony. He declared that the defendant was a psychopath—somewhat "unhinged, schizophrenic" (you know, those quacks who often use incomprehensible jargon). He also said the defendant urgently needed specialized psychiatric treatment, preferably in another country, as Western Samoa did not have adequate medical equipment to treat such a serious condition. We all thought the judge would terminate the trial, but he didn't (and many of us were happy for that). Twenty-five witnesses from the plaintiff's side were summoned to court, and each was repeatedly cross-examined in detail; fifteen witnesses from the defendant's side were also summoned. Based on their lengthy and engaging testimony, I deduce that inOn Saturday morning, May 20, the accused began to follow the nun (who was said to be the victim throughout the trial) from the convent in Vaelele, and they entered the city one after another, and then Went around the city for a while. The defense attorney asked the defendant if the victim knew he had been following her, and the defendant said: "Yes. She knew, because she loved me and I loved her!" (We were shocked to hear this blasphemy, but forgiven. (because he was obviously crazy.) After the nun went into a big store, he went to the hardware store next door and bought a bread knife - he didn't have much money with him and couldn't afford any other type of knife. He stood on the sidewalk, facing the door of the shop where the nun had entered, with a bread knife hidden in his left arm. He said with tears in his eyes that the victim walked out of the store and walked straight towards him, smiling and stretching out his arms to hug him. That's all he remembers, he said. Two vendors selling handicrafts in front of the shop testified that they saw the defendant raise a bread knife. When the poor victim stepped back, the defendant stabbed the knife into the nun's left breast and then ran away down the street. The cruel knife (exhibited in court) was inserted into the unfortunate innocent victim. One of the vendors was a plump woman. When she testified, she acted as if she were acting, her eyes bulging out with excitement, and she recounted the story with gusto. She rushed forward and hugged the crumbling victim. The nun's white clothes were stained with blood, and her head lay in her arms in pain. The witness also insisted (and we all believed her) that the victim smiled faintly as she lay dying in her thick arms, muttering that the killer would be forgiven. At this point in the interrogation, the defendant jumped up and shouted that he did not deserve forgiveness because he killed a beautiful and holy nun and deserved to be hanged! The judge ignored the defendant's request and continued the trial. The last person to take the witness stand was the defendant's father. He is old and well-known in the village for his resourcefulness, fairness, integrity, and generosity, and is highly respected. He cried and complained, asking people to forgive his family, even though his unscrupulous son had committed a heinous crime. His son - he found it difficult to call such a "beast" a son - ran away from home three years ago and lived in his mother's family (his mother had died a few years ago), apparently making friends with Bad friends. The old man said that his son was not crazy - his other 7 sons and 3 daughters were quite sane - and finally he asked the court to punish him for bringing shame to himself and his family before God, and to his village and his beloved family. The humiliated son of the country was hanged. We all were deeply moved after hearing what the old man said.was moved (many women shed tears) and felt very sorry for him. It will be difficult for him and his family to clear their name by their future actions (I secretly swore at that time that if any of my sons - I have four sons, one of whom is the same age as the defendant - causes me such shame and humiliation , I will hang him with my own hands, even if he is a madman!). After the court declared the defendant a lunatic, he immediately sentenced him to life imprisonment, and the state paid for him to be sent abroad for treatment. The defendant's father jumped up, struck his face with his fist, and again begged—quite rightly—that his son be hanged and buried without a tombstone. Two bailiffs began to escort the defendant away. The defendant turned and bowed to the audience, saying that he had loved her and should be hanged for her murder. As he passed his weeping father, he paused for a moment and whispered to his father. His father was so frightened that he fell back, gasping pitifully, and then fell to the ground in a coma, like a dead man. A month later, the defendant committed suicide in his cell on the eve of being sent to New Zealand for treatment. To this day, I continue to ask people in attendance if they know what the defendant whispered to his father. It seems no one knows. As for his father, we heard that he is currently very old and sick, and does not leave his house. He has never disclosed any information to anyone. Before writing this, I tried hard to recall the names of the defendant and the victim, but I couldn't (and still can't). At present, I can only remember one unusual thing about the defendant's appearance: there is a black mole on the left neck, which looks like a baby's hand. I have never seen a photo of the victim, so her image is completely blank in my mind. During the trial, little was said about her life. The exciting drama in the courtroom was centered on the defendant.
